An old Derbyshire Mircomill horizontal milling machine for sale. In excellent condition and with unusual and original chain drive system. Please read on.

The US company Derbyshire are still alive and kicking today and have emailed me some very interesting information about this specific Micromill machine. After giving Derbyshire the serial number CS 131 they have said the following:

"Your Micro Mill was sold to the British Ministry of war April 29, 1942 . It is a Model 65 , the Model 65 was similar to the later Micro Mills but the spindles and the positioning tables were different. It is possible on a Model 65 that the chain drive WAS done by Derbyshire. Unfortunately some of the model 65 records were lost many years ago. I believe the last of the Model 65 units was 1944. Micro Mills were sold to the British war ministry and the American Military during the second world war. During the second world war the micro mills were used for slitting operations on time fuses for bombs dropped by aircraft. Some of these machines were set up for semi automatic operations with indexers, rise and fall spindles etc."

Derbyshire have also confirmed that they did produce some Micromills with a double T slot table like this one.

I personally have looked at the chain drive and it would appear to be a very professional job. The chain drive and cog design used here enables the milling cutter to be lowered without any adverse effect on the chain tension. It is very cleaver. There is also a method to adjust the chain tension and also remove the chain if required. It is also documented that different Derbyshire Micromill machines used different drive systems. The chain drive would have been more reliable and resilient when machining tough materials.

Dimensions are:
  • Footprint is very approx 10" x 11"
  • Spindle takes arbors of 10mm
  • Table size is approx 3" x 8"
